In this Interreg 2 Seas project (duration 2018-2020), municipalities and research institutes collaborate to reduce CO2 emissions from public lighting. New techniques and methods are being elaborated and tested. The preferences of residents and other road users are also taken into consideration. For example, by only turning street lighting on when there is traffic, energy consumption can be greatly reduced, but it can also make inhabitants experience (road) unsafety. That is why it is necessary to properly measure the effects in pilots ahead of large-scale implementation. Moreover, local situations can deliver very different results regarding carbon reduction and safety experience. Nine partners participate in this project. The project budget is approximately € 3.5 million and the subsidy approximately € 2.1 million. Avans University of Applied Sciences is the lead partner in the project. The project was initiated by us (at the request of the municipality of Etten-Leur). We also brought the partnership together and wrote the grant application. During the implementation we regularly give advice.
